COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesighe said that the origins of the Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project traces back to the visionary efforts of his and the Iranian President's predecessors.

"It was President Mahinda Rajapaksa who took an interest to ensure water is made available to this area, which is called a dry zone," said Presidnet Wickremesinghe on Wednesday (24).

Former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa initiated the endeavor, recognizing the urgent need to provide water to the arid Uma Oya region. President Ahmadinejad of Iran subsequently agreed to collaborate, setting the stage for a bilateral partnership that transcends borders.

Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe also expressed gratitude to Iranian President Dr. Ebrahim Raisi for accepting the invitation and participating in this significant event.

The project, which bridges ancient irrigation traditions and modern engineering, promises to bring prosperity to the region.

According to Wickremesinghe the Uma Oya project represents more than just infrastructure development as it symbolizes the convergence of two ancient irrigation traditions—the rich heritage of Persia (Iran) and the historical practices of Sri Lanka, particularly in the Anuradhapura region.

President Wickremesinghe praised Iran's engineering skills, emphasizing their critical role in the project's success.

The technology available to Iran—developed through self-sufficiency and relentless effort—enabled the diversion of Uma Oya's tributaries into Kirindi Oya. This feat would not have been possible without Iran's advanced capabilities across various fields, said the President.
