Two racers involved in Foxhill tragedy, arrested

Colombo (News 1st) Two racers involved in the Foxhill tragedy in Diyathalawa have been taken into police custody.

Police say the suspects will be produced in court today.

Sri Lanka Police added they were arrested on charges of dangerous driving.

In what was meant to be a day of excitement for motor racing enthusiasts, a tragic incident unfolded yesterday in Sri Lanka's Diyathalawa region, resulting in the loss of seven lives, including that of a child, her grandparents and four others.

The injured were admitted to the Diyatalawa Base Hospital and the Badulla General Hospital for treatment.

Police say the condition of three people is serious.

Fox Hill Supercross is an annual motorsport extravaganza organized by the Sri Lanka Military Academy, attracting both local and international racing drivers and riders of top rank.

Approximately 100,000 spectators attended the event hosted yesterday.

Police say during the first leg of the day packed with races, a car veered off the track, crashing into a group of spectators and marshalls.

The Army confirmed that the organizers decided to suspend the event as a result of the tragedy.
