India to supply locomotives to Sri Lanka

COLOMBO (News 1st) - India has expressed interest in supplying 10 locomotives to Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka will receive the locomotives under a financial assistance, General Manager of the Department of Railways W.A.D.S. Gunasinghe said.

Before the locomotives are exported, a team of officials attached to the Department of Railways will visit India for a quality check.

Railway services in Sri Lanka have been seriously hampered due to a shortage of locomotives, Gunasinghe said.

Despite old locomotives being repaired, commuters were often inconvenienced due to technical failures, he added.
