Colombo (News 1st) - Al Jazeera journalist Hisham Abdelaziz was released by Egyptian authorities on Monday (1st) after four years in jail, Al Jazeera said.
Abdelaziz was based in Qatar and had been visiting his family in Egypt in June 2019 when he was arrested at Cairo airport while he was about to board a flight back to Doha.
He was then held on terrorism charges in pre-trial detention. Both he and Al Jazeera denied the charges but was never given a trial. The network said his detention was politically motivated as ties between Egypt and Qatar, where Al Jazeera is based, were strained at the time.
However, relations between the two countries have improved in recent months.
Two other Al Jazeera journalists remain in detention in Egypt.
