Trees that stood tall for generations near Basawakkulama Wewa, cut down

COLOMBO (News 1st) - A group had cut down multiple large trees on the banks of the Basawakkulama Wewa located in the Anuradhapura Sacred Grounds.

Accoding to the locals these trees commonly known as "Maara Trees" have been standing tall on the banks of the Basawakkulama Wewa for many generations.

They pointed out that around 10 trees have been cut down by a group.

News 1st contacted Anuradhapura Regional Irrigation Engineer Rasindu Kotawila over the matter, and he said that the Divisional Secretary of the Central Nuwara-Gam-Palatha had recommended to remove four aging trees.

He said the reason for the recommendation to remove the trees was that its roots had decayed, and it could harm the wewa and lead to a leakage.
