COLOMBO (News 1st): The Real-time Air Quality Index (AQI) of Colombo as of 12:00 noon on Saturday (Dec. 10) is at 167, which is considered unsafe and anyone could experience negative health effects from pollution in the air.

"It is important to prevent the exposure to such toxic gases, particals and air pollutants. AQI of more than 150 indicates that it is NOT suitable for people leading to various effects. It depends on the degree of exposure and duration of exposure. Avoid inhaling these gases, limit outdoor activities, and stay at home as much as possible," Dr. Channa De Silva, Consultant Paediatric Pulmonologist at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital advised the public.

He emphasized that the excessive accumulation of toxic material, especially particles less than 2.5 micrometres, poses a threat to the people's health; especially, vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant mothers, the elderly as well as people with chronic diseases related to the heart and lungs.

"If you want to go outside, wear a face mask of good quality with a proper technique. We want to prevent these gases and small particals from entering the lungs," Consultant Paediatric Pulmonologist Dr. Channa De Silva noted.

Commenting on the effects of poor AQI on children, he pointed out that children with Chronic Diseases like Asthma, are advised to continue with their medicines.

"In situations as such, there is a high chance of worsening Asthma like conditions leading to an Acute Asthma Attack. If doctors have prescribed any medication, it is advisable to continue with it until instructed to gradually stop," Dr. Channa De Silva emphasized.

He also urged parents to prevent children from engaging in outdoor activities until the air quality improves.
