COLOMBO (News 1st) - The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ will be played from 20 November to 18 December in Qatar. It will be the 22nd edition of the competition, and the first played in the Arab world.
MTV Channel (Pvt) Ltd, the network that owns and operates Sirasa TV, Shakthi TV, TV-1, News 1st and Stein Studios, has been appointed as the Official Television Rights Holders in Sri Lanka for the FIFA World Cup.
The 64 FIFA World Cup matches, played across 29 days between 32 nations, will air primarily LIVE on TV-1, whilst also being selectively simulcast and re-aired on Shakthi TV and Sirasa TV.
On Monday (21), England will take on Iran at 18:30 Sri Lankan time.
Thereafter at 21:30 Senegal will take on the Netherlands.
The United States of America will face Wales at 00:30 on Tuesday (22).
England VS Iran:
England begin their World Cup campaign on Monday evening at the Khalifa International stadium when they face Iran in the opening match of Group B.
Gareth Southgate's men are well-fancied to reach the latter stages of the competition but could be in for a tough opening game against the side coached by former Manchester United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz.
Iran are the number one Asian side in the latest FIFA world rankings, with Queiroz guiding the team to 20th place in the standings.
Iran have lost just one competitive fixture in three years but remain clear outsiders against England.
Senegal VS Netherlands:
Netherlands are back at the World Cup and are out to make a positive start when they take on Senegal in their opening game.
The Oranje missed out on the tournament four years ago having failed to qualify, but Louis van Gaal's team were strong in qualifying and are favourites to make it through Group A.
But their African opponents will be no pushovers in the first match of the competition.
Sadly for Senegal, though, they are without star player Sadio Mane due to an injury but with the likes of Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Koulibaly, Idrissa Gueye and Ismaila Sarr available, they will fancy their chances of springing a surprise.
USA VS Wales:
Wales' first World Cup match since 1958 takes place on Monday evening when they face the USA in Group B.
Robert Page's men know that they face a tough task to make the knockout stages and getting something from the opening game is vital against a young USA team.
