COLOMBO (News 1st) - Jaffna District MP G. G. Ponnambalam said that the present parliament does not represent the will of the people.
Speaking at the Parliament, the MP said that the Government itself had accepted that its mandate has been rejected, and added that the failure of the nation is not just the presence of a weak Parliament, but also of the executive presidency and the overall system of Governance.
"We've had a unitary constitution for the last 75 years which has been an abject failure. Even the government accpets that the mandate is being rejected by the people. It is because the government itself accpeted that the mandate has been rejected by the people is that you had the prime minister resinging first and then thereafter the president," he said.
Therefore, it must be accepted that this house does not in fact reprsent the will of the people, he emphasized.
The MP also pointed out that one of the other demands that the people have been making is that this Parliament must be dissolved, which is still being disregarded.
