07 suspects arrested for defacing ancient structure at Sithulpawwa Sacred Grounds

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka Police have arrested a total of 07 suspects for their involvement in defacing an ancient structure at the Sithulpawwa Sacred Grounds, inside the Yala National Park.

The treasure hunters caused considerable damage to the ancient ‘Dagaba’ and then proceeded to cover-up their crime by white-washing damaged area.

The Commissioner-General of Archeology, Senior Professor Anura Manatunga stated that following the incident, the number of police patrols operating daily in the area has also been increased. 

The Director-General said that further action would be taken based on the orders issued by the courts in this regard. The police stated that 10 police teams are conducting an investigation into the incident.
