COLOMBO (News 1st); Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa says that reports claiming that judges were called to attend a program on justice, sends a clear warning.

In a statement, Premadasa said that the Judicial Services Commission is vested with the power of appointing judges, making promotions and demotions, disciplinary actions, and making transfers.

However, the JSC has no power to make recommendations, orders and issue directives with respect to justice, said the opposition leader.

He said the doubts cast by the people on the influences made on the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law, which were impacted by the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, have been further established by these unnecessary events.

Sajith Premadasa said the Executive, legislature, and the Judiciary must respect one another.

The Opposition Leader added that he would not hesitate to take any action required to protect the independence of the judiciary.
