20A : Draft amendment presented to Parliament amidst objections from Oppositions

Colombo (News 1st); The Draft 20th Amendment to the Constitution was presented in Parliament on Tuesday (22) amidst strong objection from the opposition.

Opposition MPs representing the Samagi Jana Balavegaya were seen wearing black arm-bands and brandishing stickers against the Draft 20th Amendment to the Constitution, which was presented by Justice Minister Ali Sabry, PC.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa making a comment said the presentation of the Draft 20th Amendment to the Constitution marks a dark day for Sri Lanka.

As Opposition MPs moved to the well of the house to voice their protests, the Senior Government MPs were seen instructing ruling party MPs to also move to the well of the house in response to the protest.

The Sergeant-at-Arms and Deputy Sergeant-at-Arms were seen rushing to protect the mace of parliament, as chaos ensued inside the house of the legislature.

While the protest took place, the ruling party also tabled 45 Tax Amendments to the Parliament and the second reading of the Draft 20th Amendment to the Constitution will take place on Wednesday (23).
