COLOMBO (News1st): Marking a historic day in the annals of our nation, Sri Lanka's first ever underwater museum was declared open by Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy, Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva off the shores of Galle, a popular tourist destination. The museum has been constructed 50 feet underwater within the Galle harbour based on a concept put forward by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa. The museum had been constructed under the direct supervision of the Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy. All sculptures that have been placed at the museum were designed and sculpted by Navy sailors with the use of cement and eco friendly material. The museum is expected to be developed into an artificial coral reef over time, promoting marine life in the area and also enhancing the beauty of the museum.
