16-year-old dies at the Welikada Prison hospital

Colombo (News 1st): A 16-year-old inmate sentenced to 3 years imprisonment, has passed away at the Welikada prison hospital. The inmate, who was a resident of Hungama, was charged with theft and sentenced to three years of imprisonment one and a half months ago. Prison officials said, the inmate was first admitted to the National Institute of Mental Health in Angoda and later brought to the Welikada prison once again. When News 1st inquired, prison officials said, the inmate had hung himself inside the hospital premises. The Prisons Department said the remains of the inmate have been handed over to his relatives.
