State Labourers' Union officers arrest for accepting Rs 1000 and Rs 8000 bribe

State Labourers' Union on strike COLOMBO (News 1st) - The State Labourers' union has decided to refrain from participating in the functions of the Labour Tribunals as an act of protest. President of the State Labourers' Union Iresh Chinthaka stated that the strike has been in effect from midnight yesterday. (July 30) The union has chosen to strike as two of their officers from the Nuwara Eliya and the Kalmunei Labour Commissions have been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption. SSP Priyantha Chandrasiri stated that the two suspects had been arrested for accepting a bribe from a doctor from Nanu Oya. The bribe was a payment for the testimony of the two officers in a case being heard at the Labour Tribunal of Nuwara Eliya. The arrested officers of the Nuwara Eliya Labour Commission and the Kalmunei Labour Commission had accepted bribes of Rs. 1000 and Rs. 8000 respectively.
