COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Special Commodity Levy on dhal has been increased with effect from midnight today (May 9).
According to the Ministry of Finance, the Commodity Levy on a kilogram of split red lentils which was at 3 rupees has been increased to 12 rupees. The Special Commodity Levy on a kilogram of whole red lentils has been increased from 1 rupee to 7 rupees.
The Finance Ministry said the Special Commodity Levy was amended taking into account the reduction of dhal prices in the world market. The Ministry added that there will be no price increase in retail prices in the domestic market.
It went on to note, the measure was taken with the intention of ensuring the consumer benefits from the reduction of dhal prices in the world market.
