COLOMBO (News 1st) - Former Controller General of Immigration and Emigration, Chulananda Perera, states that Former Minister Wimal Weerawansa's wife Shashi Weerawansa had obtained a diplomatic passport by producing fraudulent documents.
Providing evidence before Colombo Chief Magistrate, Lal Ranasinghe Bandara, the former commissioner general of immigration and emigration revealed that he did not file a complaint in this regard even though such an offence warranted such a complaint. He said the complaint was not filed based on humanitarian considerations.
Chulananda Perera said Shashi Weerawansa had traveled abroad using the fake passport on four occasions from 2006 to 2008. He stated in courts that he has not taken any action against Shashi Weerawansa although he knew that using a fake passport is a crime. The case will be taken up once again on the 8th of June.
Shashi Weerawansa has requested for a new passport to travel abroad with her daughter, however, Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris opposed this request. The Deputy Solicitor General says they need to investigate her true information before issuing a new passport.
