COLOMBO (News 1st); The death toll from the ongoing severe weather crisis in Sri Lanka has surged to 123, with 130 individuals still missing, according to the latest statement from the Disaster Management Centre (DMC).
The scale of devastation is staggering:
128,877 families comprising 373,428 people have been affected.
13,690 families (43,925 individuals) are currently sheltered in 488 safe locations across the island.
The worst-hit district is Kandy, where 51 lives have been lost and 67 people remain missing. In Badulla, 35 fatalities have been reported, with 27 individuals unaccounted for.
Rescue operations continue round the clock, led by the Tri-Forces, Police, and Disaster Management teams, as authorities battle treacherous conditions to reach stranded communities.
Officials warn that persistent rainfall and unstable terrain could trigger further landslides and flooding, urging residents in high-risk zones to heed evacuation orders immediately.
