April 14, 2010: The number of incidents where motor traffic rules are being violated is on the rise, says the Motor Traffic Commissioner's Department.
Commissioner of Motor Traffic B. Wijeratne cited motorists being unaware of regulations and not being concerned about the regulations as the main reasons for the rise.
“Another reason for this is with the road system in the country being developed, speed limits being increased and motorists speeding. Six people are killed on a daily basis from motor accidents while a larger number is injured,” said Wijeratne.
As a result, a special programme has been launched to make cure motorists abide by motor traffic regulations.
Under Phase One of the new programme, a point system will be added to the new drivers license.
Accordingly the Commissioner of Motor Traffic, in the event a motorist is caught violating the law, a point will be added to the points system in the license.
