March 12, 2010: A UNF government will not curtail the education, said the Opposition Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe addressing the Matara district convention, held in Morawaka yesterday.
“Rs. 3.3 billion was spent in 2008 on school books and they reduced it to 2.2 billion in 2009, a reduction of 35 per cent. Capital spent on the development of the education sector in 2008 was Rs. 23 billion. This was reduced to 17 billion in 2009.
"What happened? There are no books, no buildings, no desks and chairs and no teachers. It is a big mess.
"We will establish a government that works for you and acts on your behalf. Not one that will curtail education. The UNF will commence its real election battle, once we reveal this programme next week,” said Mr. Wickramasinghe.
The meeting was also attended by UNF Matara district candidates contesting in the General Election.
