March 10, 2010: Lankan migrant workers, who are deported from Dubai for violating immigration laws, are often jailed as they return to Dubai after obtaining new passports, investigations have revealed.
“Information has come to light that a majority of Sri Lanka women languishing in Dubai jails fall into that category,” said L. K. Ruhunage, additional general manager of the Foreign Employment Bureau.
He added that Dubai law stipulated that an individual found guilty of illegally reentering the country could face a jail term of no less than three months.
The Sri Lankan embassy in Dubai has informed the Foreign Employment Bureau in this regard.
