PETITION SEEKS REVISION OF UNP NOMINATION LIST FOR MONERAGALA

Email Print PDF

courtMarch 09, 2010: A fundamental rights petition was filed in the Supreme Court yesterday, seeking a revision of the United National Party nomination list for the Moneragala district.

The petition was filed by Chaminda Janaka Tissakuttiarchchh, who was earlier nominated by the United National Party.

In his petition, he points out that on the 25th of February, he had signed nomination papers as a United National Party candidate.

Even though this list was put on display at the office of the district returning officer, the name of Senaka Rathnayake Kumburegedara had been included instead.

The petitioner pointed out that this individual had not signed nomination papers and that his name had been included by Ranjith Madduma Bandara.

The petitioner seeks a court order which suspends the election in the Moneragala district until the end of the hearing, as this was a false nomination paper.

The petition cites the Commissioner of Elections, the district returning officer, the secretaries of parties which have handed in nominations for the Moneragala district, two police officers of the Criminal Investigations Department, the Inspector General of Police and the Attorney General as respondents.
