March 09, 2010: A site in the Muthurajawela area has been selected for the disposal of garbage collected in the city, says Patali Champika Ranawaka, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources.
He said that specific locations had been identified by the Environment Ministry for the disposal of garbage collected in Colombo and added that the disposal could be done in the area with little effect on the environment.
However, the move has come in for severe criticism by environmentalists.
Attorney at law Jagath Gunawardena, an environmentalist, said that disposing garbage at Muthurajawela area could lead to environmental problems.
The minister, however, dismissed such concerns claiming that the site had been selected after a proper standards evaluation.
