March 08, 2010: A member of the Civil Defence Force survived an attack by a leopard when police intervened to rescue him from the marauding beast.
The member of the Civil Defence Force had been on duty at the Gonaganara police post No. 41 in Buttala last night around 9.30 when the leopard attacked him and attempted to drag him into the jungle.
Other policemen at the post had responded to his cries for help and had managed to rescue him from the deadly beast.
The injured person had been admitted to Moneragala hospital, said police who added that Zone 4 of Yala was an area where a large concentration of wild animals including leopards could be observed.
