GOVERNMENT HAS NO CLEAR-CUT FOREIGN POLICY: SOMAWANSA AMARASINGHE

Email Print PDF

somw_web_engJuly 31, 2010: The government has no clear cut foreign policy, says Somawansa Amarasinghe, leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP).

He expressed this view addressing a convention in Panadura on Thursday under the topic 'The government's two-faced foreign policy'.

“Does this government have a foreign policy? What is this foreign policy? Where do we stand according to Sri Lanka's foreign policy? What are the countries that we are aligned with? Who are the leaders with them?

“If they are talking to the Indian leaders, they should be with them. When they are talking to Chinese leaders, at that point they are with them. Is this a policy? There is nothing that we can point at and say this is our economic policy, our political policy, or  our foreign policy.

There has never been a period in our history where foreign policy had been in such an absurd mess.

“The Israeli leaders have imposed an embargo on the Gaza strip and the Palestinian people. A committee has been appointed to look into this.

Who is the Chairman? Palitha Kohona. So on the one place we have him as the chairman of a human rights committee and on the other we are saying, don't appoint a committee to look into human rights abuses in Sri Lanka. Is there a foreign policy here,” asked Somawansa.
