June 17, 2010: Seethawakapura Urban Council has found a solution to the garbage disposal problem affecting the whole country.
The council had been burdened with the garbage disposal problem for the last four decades and finally, it had come up with a very practical solution. They turn it into compost.
Explaining how it is all done, Premalal Pinto, Chairman of the Urban Council said that earlier, about 15 tons of garbage in 15 to 20 tractor loads had been brought to the dump.
“However, today, we separate glass and plastic from the rest and produce compost. We sell the glass and plastic. Today it brings the UC valuable revenue,” said Pinto.
The Western Province Waste Management Authority has allocated funds for the project.
“We decompose the garbage for about three months and turn it into compost. About 15 tons of garbage is used for the purpose. We plan to expand this project to cover the whole area. At present, we manufacture about 2,000 to 2,500 kilogrammes per day.
Pinto said that they began to sell compost from last month and had earned about Rs. 400,000. In addition, the project has provided employment to about 30 persons, said Pinto.
