June 06, 2010: Chief Ministers of provincial councils have taken a decision to ban private tuition classed on Sunday mornings and Poya days.
They had come to the decision at the Chief Ministers’ Convention that concluded yesterday at Marawila.
The decision would take effect within a month, said Berty Premalal Dissanayake, Chief Minister of the North Central Provincial Council.
“The objective of this decision is to encourage children to attend Sunday schools and partake in religious activities,” said Dissanayake.
He noted that there were many instances where tuition classes were being conducted at Buddhist temples and other places of worship on Poya days.
