President Donald Trump fired acting Attorney General Sally Yates on Monday night for “refusing to enforce a legal order designed to protect the citizens of the United States,” the White House said.
Ms Yates had said she was not convinced Mr Trump’s travel ban was lawful.
Dana Boente, US attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, replaced her as acting attorney general.
He has directed the department to enforce Mr Trump’s order.
Trump didn’t call Yates to dismiss her, she was informed by hand-delivered letter, according to a different administration official.
The White House approach also sparked an unusually public clash between a president and the civil servants tasked with carrying out his policy.
