Prime Minister,Ranil Wickremesinghe encouraged young writers to get in to the international sphere.
Speaking at the Awards ceremony of the Galle literary festival, the Prime minister added that literary works in the three languages show maturity since independence and the seperate identity that has been established
The ceremony was graced by public representatives as well as a number of local and foreign authors.Sinhala, Tamil as well as English authors were felicitated at the event.
Meanwhile statements made by former Editor in Chief of Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd, Rajpal Abeynayake during a lecture by Former editor in chief of the Hindu Newspaper, N. Ram are making the round on social media.
In it Abeynayake states that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe thereathened journalists.
“So he wants the editor of the daily mirror to go home. This is one occasion. He has threatened journalists from the well of the house.And the chilling effect on them is phenomenal. In fact I would venture to say that, as much as I disagree with a lot of the things they did, there was a more free atmosphere during the previous regime” said Mr.Abeynayake
Mr.N. Ram said that he believes the situation is more relaxed
“But we can’t be complacent, that is why we speak about free speech deficits, the challenge of overcoming these deficits remain, not just in India in Sri Lanka as well..” he said
