“India’s No.1 ranking at stake in T20 series against Sri Lanka” ran the headline on one of India’s top news magazines on February the 8th.
And after being scuttled out yesterday for 101 it wasn’t surprising that the headlines actually heralded the truth. Sri Lanka’s new trio of young fast bowlers – Kasun Rajitha, Dushmantha Chameera and Dasun Shanaka dismantled India’s batting order while simultaneously vaulting Sri Lanka to the top of the ICC T20 rankings.
Granted that both the runner ups have played fewer matches but only just. Second place West Indies have played nineteen matches to Lanka’s twenty while newly displaced third place India have played eighteen.
But that won’t dampen the victory for Lanka particularly with the top spot being achieved a little less than a month before the world T20.
Ofcourse with two remaining T20s in the series with India the hosts will be hoping to do some damage control. However, even if Sri Lanka walk away with the series 2-1 they drop India into seventh place in the rankings.
And that’s a hole no host nation for a world cup wants to be in.
