The executioner hired by the Department of Prisons and Rehabilitation has left his position.
The executioner, a forty-year-old resident of Anuradhapura, commenced work on March 3.
In the letter of resignation submitted on March 7, he stated that he is leaving the position after the mental condition he experienced on seeing the gallows.
This follows the resignation of two executioners who had left after the two-week training period. Prisons Commissioner General, Chandraratne Pallegama stated that they will be recruiting a new executioner to fill the vacant position.
