COLOMBO (News 1st) - Police have deployed 10 special investigation teams to probe the fatal shooting of attorney Buddhika Mallawarachchi and his wife in Akuregoda, Thalangama.
According to police, the teams were appointed on the instructions of the Inspector General of Police.
The units involved in the investigation include the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Police Special Task Force (STF), Colombo Crime Division (CCD), and the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID).
The shooting occurred at approximately 4:50 p.m. yesterday in the parking lot of a supermarket in Akuregoda.
Police said a group that arrived in a car opened fire at the couple before fleeing the scene.
Investigators revealed that the assailants used a T-56 assault rifle and a pistol in the attack.
The victims have been identified as a 44-year-old attorney and his 42-year-old wife, residents of Pore, Athurugiriya.
Preliminary investigations have uncovered that the slain attorney had previously appeared as legal counsel for an organized criminal known as “Karandeniya Sudda.”
Following a Magistrate’s inquest, the bodies were transferred to the Colombo National Hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations.
Police investigations are ongoing.
