COLOMBO (News 1st); China has pledged unwavering support to Sri Lanka’s education sector, announcing the continuation of its flagship China-AIDS School Uniform Material Project during a ceremonial handover of a massive consignment of fabric today (13).
Speaking at the event, Chinese Ambassador Qi Zhenhong emphasized that education must never be compromised, regardless of challenges.
“This project, launched in 2023, has now run successfully for four years. For 2026, China is donating 11.484 million meters of fabric, valued at 5.6 billion rupees, to meet the needs of 4.4 million students. Deliveries are being made in five batches—three have already arrived, and the remaining two will follow shortly. Tomorrow, we will also commence a digital transformation initiative for general education, aimed at modernizing Sri Lanka’s school system. China will always stand as a reliable partner and brother to Sri Lanka, committed to supporting your progress.”
The official handover was presided over by Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, alongside Ambassador Qi Zhenhong, Education Secretary Nalaka Kaluwewe, and senior officials.
The donation will ensure free school uniforms for students in government and government-assisted schools, as well as student monks in state-approved Pirivena institutions.
Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya expressed deep gratitude to China, noting that its assistance goes far beyond education:
“China has consistently supported Sri Lanka, even during crises like Cyclone Ditwa, when they helped communities recover and rebuild. Today’s contribution reflects a shared commitment to ensuring every child learns with dignity. I thank President Xi Jinping, the Chinese government, and Ambassador Qi Zhenhong for making sure these uniforms arrived on time. This partnership ensures no child feels different from another—a value both our nations uphold.”
