COLOMBO (News 1st); The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) has assured residents of the Colombo District and Western Province that water supply will remain uninterrupted, in the wake of severe flooding that disrupted essential services across Sri Lanka.

Engineer Chandana Bandara, Chairman of the NWSDB, confirmed that several water purification and pumping stations in multiple districts were affected by floodwaters over the past few days, causing temporary disruptions.

“Following the natural disaster, many stations became inactive. However, most areas have already had their water supply restored, and within two to three days, we expect to complete the remaining work,” he stated.

Bandara highlighted that the overflowing Kelani River posed a significant threat to the Ambathale and Biyagama purification plants, which are critical to Colombo’s water network.

“That risk is no more. Therefore, there will be no interruption to the supply of water to the Colombo District and the Western Province. There will be a continuous supply of water,” he assured.

The announcement comes as a relief to thousands of households and businesses in Colombo, which faced uncertainty amid the ongoing disaster response.
