COLOMBO (News 1st) - Six Sri Lankan nationals held by cybercrime syndicates in Myanmar have been rescued and are now under the protection of the country's military forces.

The Sri Lankan Embassy in Myanmar confirmed that the individuals are currently safe and housed within a military camp.

This rescue marks another chapter in the ongoing efforts to liberate Sri Lankans who were forcibly recruited into cybercrime operations in Myanmar’s notorious border region near Thailand.

Earlier reports indicated that at least 17 Sri Lankans had been coerced into working for criminal networks operating in what Google Maps identifies as the “Cyber Criminal Area.”

The victims were initially lured to Myanmar on tourist visas with the promise of legitimate employment.

However, upon arrival, they found themselves trapped in a region located approximately 25 kilometers from Myawaddy—a zone entirely controlled by armed groups known for running cybercrime rackets.

This area has gained infamy for its lawlessness and exploitation, with multiple cases emerging of foreign nationals being detained and forced into digital scams.
