COLOMBO (News 1st); Veteran Sri Lankan cricketer Angelo Mathews has officially announced his retirement from international Test cricket, bringing to a close a remarkable 17-year career in the longest format of the game.
In an emotional message shared with fans and the cricketing community, Mathews expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to represent his country and reflected on the journey that shaped him both as a player and a person.
“With a grateful heart and unforgettable memories, it is time for me to say goodbye to the most cherished format of the game, International Test Cricket,” Mathews wrote. “The past 17 years of playing cricket for Sri Lanka has been my highest honour and pride.”
Mathews, has been a cornerstone of Sri Lanka’s batting lineup and a respected leader on and off the field. His final appearance in Test whites will be during the upcoming series against Bangladesh in June.
While stepping away from red-ball cricket, Mathews confirmed he will remain available for selection in the white-ball formats, should the national team require his services. “I have given my everything to cricket, and cricket has given me everything in return,” he said.
He also took the opportunity to thank his family, coaches, teammates, and fans for their unwavering support throughout his career.
Mathews expressed confidence in the current Test squad, calling it a “talented side with many future and present greats,” and said he believes now is the right time to make way for a younger player to carry the mantle forward.
