COLOMBO (News 1st) Supreme Court Rejects Petition to Lift Injunction on Former IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon
An interim petition requesting the Supreme Court to lift the temporary injunction order preventing Deshabandu Tennakon from carrying out his duties as Inspector General of Police was rejected by the Supreme Court today.
The petition was presented by Ven. Dr. Bellanwila Dhammaratana Thero, Ven. Kollupitiya Rahula Thero, and Ven. Prof. Agalakada Sirisumana Thero.
The matter was taken up today before Supreme Court judges Yasantha Kodagoda, Achala Wengappuli, and Mahinda Samayawardhana.
Following the consideration of several petitions filed by a group including Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, a temporary injunction order was issued on July 24, preventing Deshabandu Tennakoon from performing his duties as the IGP.
A petition was filed requesting the Supreme Court to lift the interim order that restricts him from performing his duties, as the Election Commission is unable to instruct the IGP to oversee the presidential election scheduled for the 21st due to such injunction order.
