COLOMBO (News 1st); Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, leader of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), has strongly defended his family against ongoing corruption allegations.

Speaking at a public rally to support his son Namal, Rajapaksa addressed the accusations that have been repeatedly leveled against the Rajapaksa family.

"They do the same thing. Everywhere they go, they chant that the Rajapaksas are thieves. I don't know why," Rajapaksa stated adding that none of these claims have been proven.

He emphasized that despite the persistent claims, no concrete evidence has been presented to substantiate the allegations.

Rajapaksa recounted instances where his detractors questioned his financial integrity, only to find no proof of wrongdoing.

"Today, without shame, they are repeating the same lie again and again," he said.

Rajapaksa urged future and current politicians not to remain silent in the face of false accusations.

He called for necessary legal measures to be taken to promote a culture of gentlemanly politics in the country.

"This is a challenge. Today, the people have chosen Namal as the leader who can overcome that challenge," he concluded, expressing confidence in his son Namal Rajapaksa's leadership.
