COLOMBO (News 1st); According to reports 49 inmates have fled from Prisons within 3 months of this year.
Prisons spokesperson and commissioner Gamini B. Dissanayake says 2 inmates among them have been taken back into police custody.
He adds steps are underway to arrest the inmates who have fled so far.
The spokesperson emphasized that the Sri Lanka Police have been informed of the inmates that have fled the prisons and search operations are underway to find the missing inmates.
Meanwhile, an inmate had fled the Weeravila Open Prison Camp last night.
Accordingly, the inmate who had fled the open prison camp is a 34-year-old inmate who is a resident of Yoda Ela Gama, Eppawala, and was referred for rehabilitation.
The Prisons spokesperson Gamini B. Dissanayake says the inmate was charged with corruption by the Anuradhapura Court.
The suspect who was prisoned in 2021 was to be freed in 2026.
Investigations are being carried out by the Weerawila Police to arrest the suspect.
