Sirisena's Role as SLFP Chairman Under Scrutiny

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Chief District Judge of Colombo issued an additional injunction, restraining former President Maithripala Sirisena from assuming the role of Chairman within the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.

This injunction, prompted by a petition submitted by Montagu Sarachchandra, an executive member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, remains in effect until the conclusion of the trial.

The petition was filed citing the constitutional framework of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, and requests an order preventing Maithripala Sirisena from serving as SLFP Chairman.

It argues that as per the party constitution, Sirisena has no legl right to serve as the Chairman of Party, as he loses the post, after vacing the presidency.

Moreover, pursuant to the party's constitution, it is designated that Maithripala Sirisena transition to the role of patron following the conclusion of his presidential tenure.

The petition further identifies Dayasiri Jayasekara, Lasantha Alagiyawanna, and Duminda Dissanayake— previous general secretaries of the party—as additional respondents in the legal action.

Concurrently, the Chief District Judge has directed to further extend the order issues against the removal of SLFP Senior Vice President Mahinda Amaraweera, Treasurer Lasantha Alagiyawanna, and National Organizer Duminda Dissanayake, until May 8th.

The presiding judge has instructed the respondents to submit their objections to the petition before the court on the aforementioned date.
