Car with body found at the bottom of Godawela canal

COLOMBO (News 1st) - A body of a 29-year-old individual reported missing was discovered inside the vehicle he was driving in this evening in the Godawela canal in Polgasowita. The individual has been identified as Lahiru Samarasinghe a resident of Sri Vishnu Kovil road in Dehiwala. His parents had lodged a complaint at the Kohuwala Police yesterday(May 19) that their son was missing after he had left the house for a birthday party on May 17th. The body was discovered inside the vehicle in the canal near the Polgasowita, Heraliyawala Hotel where the birthday party was held after a resident informed the police that a vehicle had veered off into the canal. Based on the information, operations were carried out by the Kahathuduwa police division by deploying divers in search of the vehicle and the body. The vehicle was recovered around 3.30 pm today (May 20) before Kesbewa Acting Magistrate, Sunethra Perera. The vehicle and the body were identified by the parents. The body of the deceased had been taken to Kalubowila Teaching Hospital and the vehicle is currently under the custody of Kahathuduwa Police division. According to the Police, the victim had left the hotel premises on the following day at about 12.30 pm. Investigations are underway to ascertain the cause of death.
