Colombo (News1st): The Deputy Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka delivered the Indian President's message to mark the 70th Republic Day of India at an event held in Colombo today (Jan 26). This year also marks the 150th birth anniversary of the leader of the Indian independence movement Mahatma Gandhi.
Deputy High Commissioner (Dr.) Shilpak N. Ambule noted that India is at the doorstep of eliminating extreme poverty and for the first time in memory, it is happening so. He added that India has been united, integrated and now it is being networked.
The Republic Day was celebrated at India House by Indian expatriate families and officials of the High Commission headed by the Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka Taranjit Singh Sandhu.
Meanwhile, “Strings of Peace” to mark the 70th Republic Day of India was held at the BMICH in Colombo yesterday. The Sarod Recital featured legendary Sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan along with sons Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash.
The event saw the participation of Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumarathunge, members of parliament and other dignitaries.
High Commissioner Taranjit Singh Sandhu said they see Sri Lanka as, not only a maritime neighbour but a friend whom they can trust, a partner whom they can count on. He added that he is confident that Sri Lanka shares the same sentiment towards India in equal measure.
Sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and his sons Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash who are visiting Sri Lanka for the first time were felicitated by Indian High Commissioner Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa and Speaker Karu Jayasuriya.
